In May, Amon G. Carter Stadium received new grass and an updated drainage system for the first time in 21 seasons. Years of paint build-up had impeded the field’s water runoff.
Starting in January, crews dug up the existing sod and subsoils and replaced more than 1½ miles of pipe. They topped it with 2,500 tons of gravel and 5,000 tons of sand.
“It was about 300 truck loads when you add it all up,” said Ross Bailey ’76 (MEd ’78), associate athletics director for facilities.
By the late spring growing season, workers rolled out strips of Bermuda 419 grass with the soil washed, cut to about 40 inches wide. The new surface will raise the center of the field by about 6 inches for a desired grade for drainage.
