From the Chancellor: The Gifts of 2020

The Covid-19 pandemic gave us a tumultuous roller coaster of a year — full of lessons, loss and seemingly insurmountable challenges. But it gave us gifts as well and helped show the world that Horned Frogs are made of grit, intelligence and resilience.

We tapped into our tenacity.

Together, we created a semester that would deliver the Texas Christian University experience as fully as possible. Through intensive summer training, faculty became learners, investing immeasurable hours to give their students a world-class education. Our incredible Student Affairs staff sustained a connective student life, reimagining Frog Camp and offering new experiences like Frog Family Week and TCU Traditions Week. Through careful consideration and countless safety protocols, we kept the dreams of our student-athletes in play.

Innovation and resourcefulness were everywhere, every day.

TCU’s campus quickly adapted to in-person and virtual classes with new technology-rich spaces for learning and living. We found ways to deliver critical information, mental health services and Covid-19 testing. Uniting us as a community, beloved school traditions from Convocation to Carols by Candlelight went virtual, attracting new audiences in the process. Alumni events drew Frogs together on social media. College of Fine Arts students shared their talents virtually with a world in need of diversion and joy. New forums for expression sprang up, like the “Create and Protect” exhibit, which invited creative participation and offered free custom masks to the public.

We discovered deep new levels of generosity.

Horned Frogs looked out for others in myriad ways, starting with personal protective equipment drives led by our medical students and faculty. Students and staffers stepped in as care coordinators to help Horned Frogs in Covid-19 isolation, and volunteers delivered thousands of pounds of fresh produce over the summer. Hundreds of volunteers participated in person and online in TCU’s annual Day of Service. TCU Gives Day recorded its second-highest year ever in both dollars and donors supporting Lead On: A Campaign for TCU, which continues to make significant progress for our people, programs and future.

We committed to one another with spirit and patience.

For the benefit of the greater good, thousands of students and staff took the “Protect the Purple” pledge, promising to help keep the TCU family — and the public — healthy.

So many reasons to be grateful

Our passionate, powerful Horned Frog community leaves me thankful and inspired, and the future fills me with hope. And I’m not the only one feeling optimistic: During a devastating time for the nation’s universities, we experienced an unprecedented upward jump in national rankings and solid enrollment for fall 2020.

Our community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and supporters took their love of TCU to a new level in 2020, and we are grateful for the gift of having you as a Horned Frog. A new phase of challenges lies ahead, to be sure. But Horned Frogs are ready for it.
