Marine Lance Cpl. Benjamin Whetstone Schmidt, 24, spent three semesters at TCU before leaving school to join the Marines. Schmidt died in Afghanistan on Oct. 6, a victim of friendly fire. Before Schmidt left in September for his second tour in Afghanistan, he chose to name TCU as beneficiary of his $200,000 military life insurance policy, stipulating that it be used for a scholarship for a history student.

His father, Dr. David Schmidt, who is the doctor for the San Antonio Spurs, has matched the amount and is encouraging others to contribute as well. For information about the Benjamin W. Schmidt Memorial Scholarship Fund, call 817.257.7785, or write to Nancy Petruso, TCU Box 29700, Fort Worth, Texas, 76129.
