Amorette Hinderaker: For the Sake of Argument

Expanding perspectives is one way to lead discourse, she says.

Amorette Hinderaker, TCU’s convener of debates and an associate professor of communication studies, talks host Rachel Hedstrom through four tips to survive an argument… and keep friends.

“When we think that just our discourse over a dinner table is going to lead to change, we tend to get too heated about ‘my belief is the only one,” Hinderaker said. “You’ll leave there with a big ego and fewer friends, and I’m not sure that that’s productive for any of us. We all lose in that case.”
