Schollmaier Arena to open in December
Weather delays have pushed back the opening of the facility to Dec. 19 for graduation exercises.
The renovation of the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena will not be complete in time for the basketball season opener, TCU Athletics announced.
The first games in the facility will be a men’s and women’s doubleheader on Dec. 20. The men are scheduled to play Abilene Christian at 1 p.m., with the women playing Southern Utah at 3:30. The first event in the arena will be the 2015 Fall Commencement ceremonies.
“We were notified today that the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena will not be ready for use when our basketball programs open their seasons next Friday (Nov. 13),” said Chris Del Conte, director of intercollegiate athletics. “We were met with some unforeseen circumstances, including weather conditions over the past few weeks which caused delays. We have now chosen Dec. 20 as the opening date for our new basketball home. With both our men and women having home games that day, our student-athletes from those two programs will both be able to share in the historic opening of the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena.
“With our new TCU Athletics Hall of Fame, team spaces, courtside club, food courts, wider concourses, new video board and additional restrooms, we are more confident than ever that we will have the finest facility in the Big 12. We want to make sure we do this right. We sincerely apologize for the delay to our fans of both programs as well as the many donors who have turned our dream of a new arena into a reality. When opened next month, the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena will enhance our student-athlete experience as well as being a tremendous source of pride for the TCU and Fort Worth communities.”
The Nov. 13 season openers for the TCU men and women will be played on campus in the University Recreation Center. The women host Sam Houston State at 6 p.m. The men face Southeastern Louisiana at 8:30 p.m.
The men will play their remaining games before Dec. 20 at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center in Fort Worth. The women will play in the rec center. The men will face Colgate at the recreation center on Dec. 5.
Work on the $72 million project was delayed by rain in the spring, and weather delays in October further slowed the schedule.
Last season, TCU’s women played at the campus rec center, and the men played at Wilkerson-Greines. The Frogs were 12-6 at the Fort Worth school district facility.
Season-ticket holders may use their season tickets for admission into the games at Wilkerson-Greines and the University Rec Center. Seating will be general admission.
