Fulbright Frogs

Two recent grads continue their studies abroad.

Kathleen Perley and Christina Durano graduated from TCU in May, but they’ll continue their studies in other parts of the world as Fulbright Scholars.
Perley, a speech pathology major and Spanish minor from Houston, will travel to Spain to study the phonetics of Spanish and English and how they interact with each other when people learn a second language. She will also serve as a teaching assistant in a secondary school in Madrid.
“Receiving the Fulbright grant means the world to me,” said Perley. “When I studied abroad last year in Seville, I discovered a true passion for the language and culture of Spain. It was during time abroad that I decided to couple my background in speech pathology with Spanish.”
Christina Durano, a senior broadcast journalism major from Albuquerque, will travel to the Philippines to examine the role of Filipino national television broadcast reports in the overthrow of former president Ferdinand Marcos.
“Receiving the Fulbright is undoubtedly the biggest blessing and honor I have ever received,” said Durano. “Before coming to TCU, I had never even considered applying for such an opportunity; it seemed like an impossible dream. TCU turned this absurd hope into a tangible reality. It wouldn’t have been possible without the unparalleled opportunities and education I have received here, and the support of my family, friends and professors.”
The Fulbright Scholar Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and funds 10 to 12 months of research. Established in 1946, it is the largest U.S. international exchange program that offers opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.— KH
