Scholarships will continue to be a fundraising focus of The Campaign for TCU.

The Campaign for TCU, Texas Christian University’s comprehensive fundraising effort, has exceeded its $250 million goal, and gifts and pledges now total more than $322 million. In spite of a lagging economy, the university passed the goal two years before the campaign’s 2012 conclusion.

“Support for the campaign has been remarkable,” said TCU trustee and campaign chair Matthew K. Rose, CEO of BNSF Railway.

“We will recommend an increased campaign goal to the Board of Trustees in November and will provide the TCU community with more details at that time,” said Don Whelan, vice chancellor for University Advancement.

“Generous campaign support has enabled the university to build outstanding facilities, make significant additions to the endowment, develop academic programs such as the John V. Roach Honors College and the Andrews Institute of Mathematics & Science Education, and much more,” he said.

Chancellor Victor J. Boschini Jr. said the “remarkable support” is helping TCU achieve its vision of creating a world-class, values-centered university experience.

“However, we cannot rest on these accomplishments,” he said. “As the campaign has progressed, additional challenges and opportunities have arisen. For example, the need for scholarship funds has grown significantly as the economic downturn has affected many of our families. In response, the university has adopted an aggressive scholarship initiative with a goal of $100 million.”

About $62 million already has been contributed toward the goal for annual and endowed scholarships. As of July 31, donors have committed more than $51 million for academic programs and faculty support, including 12 endowed chairs and professorships. About $41 million has been raised for scholarship endowment, including the Bob Bolen Leadership Scholars program created by The Sarah & Ross Perot Jr., Foundation. Almost $33 million has been directed to the Annual Fund, which supports the university’s mission through general scholarships and academic programs.

The Campaign for TCU is also helping to underwrite a campus transformation with facilities such as the J.E and L.E. Mabee Foundation Education Complex with Betsy and Steve Palko Hall; Clarence and Kerry Scharbauer Hall; the Schieffer School of Journalism Convergence Center; the Brown-Lupton University Union; four residence halls in the new Campus Commons: Amon G. Carter Hall, Teresa and Luther King Hall, Mary and Robert J. Wright Hall and Kellye Wright Samuelson Hall; the Mary Wright Admission Center; the Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility and Cox Field; the Meyer-Martin Athletic Complex; and the Jane Justin Field House. A $105 million donor-financed renovation of Amon G. Carter Stadium was announced in August. The total committed for facilities is about $179 million.

In addition, $111.5 million has been raised for other priorities.

“During the remaining two years of the campaign, we will continue to seek support for scholarships, academic programs and other programs and initiatives that enhance the TCU experience for our students,” Boschini said.
