What you may not know about TCU Ranch Management

It was founded to develop a program that combined hands-on experience and practical business principles.

TCU’s Ranch Management program was founded in 1955 when directors of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association approached former-TCU trustee Milton Daniel ’12, a ranch owner from Breckenridge, to develop a program that combined hands-on experience and practical business principles.

More than 1,300 students have earned certificates in Ranch Management. The nine-month program includes the study of livestock production, natural resource conservation, accounting principles, marketing and general management principles. Annual enrollment is limited to 34 students to ensure personal attention and allow for frequent field trips, including five, week-long trips to operations in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

In 2004, a Bachelor of Science in ranch management was added to the curriculum through the College of Science and Engineering. The bachelor’s degree requires students to minor in business.

The Institute of Ranch Management meets the continuing education needs of the ranching industry, offering customized seminars and courses to professional groups and alumni of the Ranch Management program.
