
Making Sense of Meteorites
Classifying space rocks requires careful laboratory evaluation, followed by peer review.
Rhiannon Mayne, the Oscar and Juanita Monnig Endowed Chair of Meteoritics and Planetary Science, knows a meteorite when she sees one. But recognizing the dense, magnetic debris from space, which can date back 4.6 billion years, isn’t enough to call it a meteorite.
