Bob Lamey ’60 has been the radio voice of the Indianapolis Colts since the 1980s.

Bob Lamey ’60 doesn’t get to Fort Worth much during the fall. He’s a bit busy during the football season. Lamey has been the radio voice of the Indianapolis Colts – save for a three-year stint in the 1990s – ever since the NFL franchise moved from Baltimore in 1984.

Lamey, who turns 75 on Dec. 23, returned to TCU in October during the Colts’ bye week and shared with sports broadcasting students in the Department of Film-TV-Digital Media a litany of memories from his 50-plus-year career (and counting).

Lamey fondly recalls calling legendary quarterback Peyton Manning’s 14 seasons with the Colts. “If you can find a better person than Peyton, I’d like to know who that is,” he said. “But we had to move on and as luck would have it – bad choice of words – we got Andrew [Luck].”

A member of the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame, Lamey also dispensed advice to students about how to hook on with a professional or college sports team. As NFL broadcasts continue to find new ways to court sponsors, Lamey has to wedge an increasing number of sponsor reads into his broadcast. There’s always an opportunity for young people to get in good with a team if they can figure out innovative ways to sell ads and generate revenue, he said.

As appealing as a job with a sports team might seem, there’s one important thing to keep in mind when choosing a job, he said.

“Do you want to go to Team A or Team B? Do you want to go college or pro? Make the decision that’s best for you. Go where you’re going to be happy. If you’re not happy, days are long.”

Lamey said he’s been fortunate. He’s never had a long day doing what he loves.
