One-fourth of TCU students participate in a study abroad program and each year the Center for International Studies asks students to send in their best shots for the annual photography contest.

This year’s winners included pictures by Corley Padgett, a junior communications studies major, flashing purple pride in a Swedish community garden and riding a bike in Copenhagen. Padgett said she learned a lot about sustainable living in Scandinavia by the people’s embrace of community gardens and opting for bicycles over cars in their daily commute.

“In the past, I have rarely considered riding a bicycle as a way to help make the environment better,” Padgett wrote in her winning entry. “I have only regarded it as a form of exercise and a fun option for recreation. It is a dominant means of travel to most of the citizens’ destinations in these Scandinavian countries. By choosing to live closer to my job, I can ride my bicycle to work, the store and nearby activities as opposed to driving my car.

“Actively participating in this endeavor alone will help reduce many emissions that I produce when driving my car. I want to be a global citizen, and by making better lifestyle choices, I can contribute to improving the environment, and at the same time, set an example to others.”
