Wood-paneled great hall, study pods and a tiered retaining wall patio are among the high-end amenities for honors residence.

The room sizes won’t change, but just about everything else about Milton Daniel Hall will be new and improved.

The residence hall, which has 300-plus beds, closed in May 2009 and will reopen in August as the home to students of the John V. Roach Honors College.

“As with all our renovations, we wanted to include some unique features, and we felt like our honor students deserved high-quality amenities,” said Craig Allen, director of Residential Housing.

Much of the interior will be wood-paneled, including the building’s great hall lobby, which was enlarged to accommodate a vaulted ceiling in the back.

An open staircase off the lobby descends to a basement lounge with a piano, mini-theater and game room.

The hall’s third floor will be reserved for upperclassmen and offer a mix of single and double rooms. That floor will have small study pods off the hallway and a senior lounge with faux fireplace and an arched bay window.

Bathrooms are being designed “club style,” with built-in wooden cubbies so students can lock up their toiletries. Like other newly renovated residence halls, Milton’s bathrooms will have individual shower stalls.

A new back patio with a tiered retaining wall gives residents another place to meet or study.

The building is being redesigned with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification in mind, and administrators say it is on track to receive Gold certification.
