Faces of Financial Aid: Floyd Hernandez III

Communications major kept up good grades despite negative influences to earn scholarship and grants.

If this were an ordinary story, Floyd Hernandez III would not be a student at TCU (or anywhere else, for that matter). He would be a young man who grew up in a world that held out little hope for his success.

This is not that story.

Growing up in Northwest Fort Worth, Hernandez, the oldest of three children, pulled himself away from the influences that surrounded him. His mother was unemployed. His father was in prison on a robbery conviction. Around him people made a living on “easy money.”

“If there was anything I was going to do it was to get out of that situation,” says Hernandez, a well-spoken, bright young man who created his own set of values without role models to follow.

As a boy, he was shy and smart, the kind of kid who had worked since middle school and then came home and went to his room to read and dream. He dreamt of using his 3.9 GPA at Lake Worth High School to get into college, find a job and someday buy a brick house with rose bushes out front. He wanted to be a leader that would set a new course for his family, and someday create foundations that would aid impoverished children around the world.

Today, Hernandez is moving actively toward those dreams, thanks to a TCU scholarship, two loans and two grants.

Now 21, the senior communications major is a full-time student and holds down two jobs. A summer Study Abroad trip to London was eye-opening — he’d never been out of Fort Worth — and gave him the confidence to dream even more dreams: he wants to start a scholarship fund someday and name it after Mike Scott, TCU’s director of scholarships and financial aid.
