I would have to answer Hidden Figures. As an African-American woman and mother of two elementary-age girls, I like that this movie dealt with some challenging topics in our history in a family-friendly manner. Further, it showed women navigating and excelling in a time and arena less than hospitable to them.

James RiddlespergerThere are about 120 options for my favorite movie, but I would say it is Casablanca because I really like the actors. And it portrays a conflict in a very sensitive way — conflict that not only portrays the difficulties of World War II, but also the human difficulties.

James PetrovichMy favorite movie is Amélie, a quirky French film about a shy young woman who finds a small box of mementos hidden by a child in the wall of the woman’s apartment. She tracks down the owner, now a grown man, and stealthily returns them. The film has an amazing score, and I have watched it many times.

Lydia MackayI have so many favorites, but if I had to pick just one, it would be The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The story is dark and intriguing; the characters are wild and diverse; there’s just the right amount of camp. And the music makes me sing. It’s fun. It’s scary. It’s wicked. It’s weird. It’s beautiful, and it’s a cult classic.

Ashley EnglishOne of my favorites is Coming to America starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall. My family regularly references scenes and lines from the movie in everyday conversation. The creativity of the starring actors in playing multiple characters in a substantive plot was amazing. Plain and simple, this movie is hilarious.

Sarah VartabedianOne of my favorite movies is the adaptation of The Pirates of Penzance. I watched it on repeat as a child, and I love its unabashed silliness. In my young mind, Kevin Kline brilliantly navigated the demands of piracy. He was criminal but caring.

Travis TokarIf I had to boil it down to one single movie, it would have to be a comedy, and I’ll go with Tommy Boy. There are just so many great lines in that film, and the closing scene still makes me laugh, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

Mark DemarestIt may be inconceivable, but my favorite movie is The Princess Bride. It’s got fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love and miracles.

  1. The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. It has everything. Classic automobiles. Mystery, suspense and intrigue. A love story culminating in a nuptial exchange. And a victorious underdog. Oh, and organ music. Not Emeritus Professor of Organ Emmit Smith caliber, but pretty good organ music nonetheless.
